A model for the importance of large arborescent palms in the dynamics of seasonally-dry amazonian forests Biota Neotropica
Salm,Rodolfo; Jalles-Filho,Euphly; Schuck-Paim,Cynthia.
In this study we propose a model that represents the importance of large arborescent palms in the dynamics of seasonally-dry Amazonian forests. Specifically, the model is aimed at guiding the investigation of the role of large arborescent palms on forest regeneration and succession. Following disturbance, the high level of luminosity reaching recently formed forest gaps favors the quick proliferation of shade-intolerant lianas that, by casting shade on the crowns of mature forest trees and increasing tree-fall probability, suppress forest succession. Due to their columnar architecture palm trees are, however, not severely affected by vines. As the palms grow, the canopy at the gaps becomes gradually higher and denser, progressively obstructing the passage...

A new inventory for fishes of headwater streams from the rio das Cinzas and rio Itararé basins, rio Paranapanema system, Paraná, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Frota,Augusto; Ota,Renata Rúbia; Deprá,Gabriel de Carvalho; Ganassin,Maria Julia Mileo; Graça,Weferson Júnio da.
Abstract: The rio das Cinzas and rio Itararé basins are important tributaries of the rio Paranapanema, a major left-bank tributary of the upper rio Paraná basin. The upper reaches of both drainages intersect the northern portion of the APA Escarpa Devoniana (Devonian Escarpment Environment Protection Area, EPA), an area considered crucial for the preservation of biodiversity. This study aimed to provide an ichthyofaunistic inventory for headwater streams of the rio das Cinzas and rio Itararé basins, both within and off of the borders of the EPA, increasing the knowledge about the species already known from streams in the rio Paranapanema system. We found 32 fish species, representing five orders and 12 families. Siluriformes was the richest order followed...

A new species of Colosmittia Andersen et Sæther from Costa Rica (Chironomidae: Orthocladiinae) Biota Neotropica
Andersen,Trond; Mendes,Humberto Fonseca; Hagenlund,Linn Katrine.
Colosmittia anamariae sp. n. from Costa Rica is described and figured as male imago. The genus Colosmittia Andersen et Sæther, 1994 was described based on a single species, C. clavata Andersen et Sæther, 1994 from the West Usambara Mountains in Tanzania, East Africa. A second species, C. brasileira Mendes et Andersen, 2009 was recently described from Brazil. The discovery of a third species in Costa Rica indicates that the genus might be widespread in the Neotropical region.

A new species of freshwater amphipod (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Hyalellidae) from state of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Streck-Marx,Morgana Taís; Castiglioni,Daniela da Silva.
Abstract: The current study describes a new species of Hyalella found in a natural pond at the municipality of Palmeira das Missões, located in the northwestern region of state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The new species differs from other species found in state of Rio Grande do Sul (Hyalella bonariensis, H. castroi, H. kaigang, H. imbya, H. georginae, H. gauchensis, H. montenegrinae and H. pampeana) in the type and number of setae on uropods, on telson and on the inner face of gnathopod 1. Besides, Hyalella palmeirensis is morphologically similar to H. curvispina, especially in the shape and number of setae of uropods. However, H. palmeirensis differs from H. curvispina in having only two simple setae on telson, the inner face of gnathopod 1...

Henriques-Oliveira,Ana Lucia; Spies,Márcia Regina; Dumas,Leandro Lourenço.
The Neotropical subgenus Notalina (Neonotalina) Holzenthal, 1986 has ten described species in two species groups: brasiliana, formed by seven species from Southeastern Brazilian and Goiás State; and roraima, represented by three species from the Amazonian and Andes regions. In this paper, a new species of Notalina is described and illustrated from specimens collected in the Mantiqueira mountain range, Southeastern Brazil. The new species belongs to the brasiliana group and is easily recognized by the poorly developed dorsomesal and ventrolateral processes and the pair of mound-like protuberances located mesolaterally on abdominal segment X, and by the robust, rounded mesoventral processes and long digitate mesodorsal processes of the inferior appendages. A new synonym for Micropholis gardneriana (Sapotaceae) with complete description, anatomy and distribution notes Biota Neotropica
Ferreira,Angélica Cândida; Araújo,Josiane Silva; Almeida Jr,Eduardo Bezerra de; Zickel,Carmen Silvia.
Abstract: In the present work, we synonymize Micropholis compta under M. gardneriana due to the overlap of morphoanatomical characters and the absence of distinctive attributes, verified during taxonomic and anatomical study of the genus Micropholis for Brazil. This study provides an updated description of M. gardneriana, including macro- and micro-morphological data, a distribution map, and comments on conservation status, ecological and taxonomy.
